Custom Striping Streamline Production With Roland DG AP-640 Resin Printers
Custom Striping
Starting out in 2011 as a supplier of caravan stripes and graphics, Melbourne-based company Custom Striping (Automotive Stripes Australia) has grown to become one of the largest suppliers of pinstriping in the country. In addition to this, the company offers a wide range of signage applications to the caravan industry, all of which is produced on Roland DG equipment. After initially choosing Roland DG based on recommendations within the industry, Custom Striping has stuck by the brand since the beginning. Their current fleet includes a TrueVIS VF2-640 printer and two PRO4 XF-640’s that have been in operation for 7 years now.
Based on their confidence in the brand, the announcement of the TrueVIS AP-640 resin printer in early 2023 piqued the company’s interest. Whilst there was some concern on the limitations of resin technology, owner Ryan Smith notes ‘we spoke with various contacts in the industry who had knowledge of similar technology from other brands, and what the common limitations were with it. We were confident that the (Roland DG) technology was building and improving on what was already out there’. With these concerns quelled, and with the assistance and support from their local supplier, Spicers, the decision was made to purchase the AP-640 and Ryan was immediately impressed with the results: ‘We are absolutely amazed with the production speed, quality and also colour gamut…maintenance and cleaning is much easier and down time due to problems is very rare’.

After 3 months of heavy use and putting the printer through its paces, Custom Striping made the decision to purchase a second AP-640 to keep up with the company’s workload. Increasing production and improving workflow was key and the immediate benefits of zero outgassing time was important in achieving this. Ryan also notes that ‘the dryer has a very fast heat up and cool down time compared to what we have heard about other brands, and very little of that heat is lost into the room due to an efficient air recirculation system in the drying unit’.
Overall the experience with Roland DG and Spicers has been a very positive one with Ryan singing the praises of the AP-640, which has led at least two other companies to purchase the new model. After a long relationship with the Roland DG brand Ryan concludes ‘They have always looked after us, and their communication is very good, which is a massive part of feeling valued as a customer’.
